local college campus, stealing from customers waiting inside. yet another scandal in the d.c. police department. a veteran officer, accused of stealing on the job. we'll tell you how they figured it out. forget sitting in traffic. gondolas could soon help you get from d.c. to virginia and back. a look at the idea that is getting a lot of attention tonight. >> "news4 at 11" starts now. first tonight, gunmen masked. they robbed a carry-out restaurant and the customers inside. >> it happened a few hours ago off 12th street northeast near catholic university. and shomari stone is at the scene live with the report. shomari? >> reporter: right now police are searching for the gunman. they found their getaway minivan not too far away. as you can see, the restaurant is closed, the bars are up. and the owner hopes police catch the crooks and put them behind bars. crime scene tape surrounds authentic mexican food restaurant on 12 street northeast, just seven blocks

from catholic university. d.c. police say around 8:00 tonight four to five men wearing black masks, black jackets, two dressed in camouflage pants rushed in with guns. owners say they stole customers' cell phones. they then pointed the guns at his employees, forcing the two women to open the register and give up the cash. police snapped photos of the scene. questioned witnesses, and took statements from employees. the owner says they're scared. >> i feel bad, but, you know, bad things happen. >> reporter: back out here live, the customers who were actually in this restaurant tell me that they are too scared to talk on camera. they're concerned that those men could possibly come back. as for this restaurant, popular to a lot of the folks in the area. well, the owner tells me he plans on reopening tomorrow. live here in northeast d.c., i'm shomari stone, news4. more trouble for d.c.'s police department. officer rodney williams, a 24-year veteran of the force, is

accused of stealing jewelry from the department's evidence room. his arrest comes after two other high profile crimes involving d.c. police officers. last month officer linwood barnhill was charged with pimping teenaged girls. mark washington was arrested on child porn charges a few weeks earlier but later committed suicide. six people homeless tonight after a fire destroyed their house in prince george's county. a fire broke out after 6:00 on 40th avenue at lawrence street in colmar manor. it took longer to put out the flames because the older home had some additions, and that made it easier for the fire to spread. firefighters say they plan to help the displaced residents. >> it's tragic. any family that has to go through this, especially this time of the year in the cold and the weather, to have somebody displaced like this is hard. and we want to reach out to them as much as we can and try to help them after the fact. >> everybody inside the house was able to get out safely.

firefighters are still trying to figure out what started that fire. >> reporter: new allegations against new jersey governor chris christie, and it may contradict about what he has been saying about the now notorious traffic jam. wendy re wendy reiger is live. >> reporter: chris christie says he never knew about the traffic jams until the media first reported. but now one insider says oh, no, he knew before that and new jersey's largest newspaper, "the star-ledger" says if the new claims are christie must resign. this is video just in of the governor leaving a high profile party in new york this evening. so he is having a good night. but david wildstein is making new allegations about the george washington bridge traffic snarl in a letter from his lawyer. he is christie's former appointee to the port authority, who agreed in an e-mail to cause punitive traffic problems as political punishment after an apparent request from christie's then chief of staff. that letter says wildstein has

evidence that christie knew about those closures as they happened. it's important to note, however, that we do not know what proof or evidence they are offering. christie's camp says that letter confirms what the governor has said all along, especially in the two-hour news conference, that he had no prior knowledge of the closures before they happened, and he stands by his adamant denials from earlier this month that he did not know the closures could be politically motivated. >> i am humiliated by the fact that i did not know this and that i was deceived. >> and tonight governor christie again posted this photo to his instagram account from howard stern's birthday party in new york, saying he had just introduced his friend, jon bon jovi on stage. apparently not disturbed by the allegations that are starting to leak out. at the life desk, i'm wendy reiger, back to you. >> thanks, wendy. tonight the search is on for a suspect and a motive after two

people were shot and killed inside their house as their young children stood nearby. the couple was found shot to death inside their apartment in anacostia yesterday. the victims have been identified as renata hurley background and harley ingraham. the couple's children were found in the house. they were not harmed. police believe the couple was targeted, but they're still trying to figure out why. that crime brings the number of murders in d.c. to 14 this year alone. at this time last year, d.c. recorded three murders. today police addressed the spike in murders. they say at least four homicides this month have been domestic and occurred inside apartments which is something they cannot control. two new developments tonight in the investigation of a dying man who collapsed just outside a d.c. fire station. first, reports say the lieutenant in charge of that station wants to retire. shh did not answer when news4 went to her door. medric mills' family says

firefighters at engine 26 refused to help him last saturday. he died at the hospital. now another woman has come forward saying the same thing happened to her son four years ago at a different fire station. >> he got out of his car. he knock on the door, and he said i'm having chest pain. the emt told him we cannot help you. >> 35-year-old andre rutter died of a heart attack. his mother is suing the d.c. fire department. fire officials say they cannot comment because of that lawsuit. right now crews are working to repair a sinkhole, a big one in southeast d.c. water main break last night caused the sinkhole to form on massachusetts avenue near 34th place and n fort dupont park. the department of transportation has closed the roadway while crews make the repairs. people who live near the area are still able to get into their homes. ddot hopes to have things fixed

in seven to ten days, they say. it all depends on the weather. what about that weather? first we're told maybe warm and then all kinds of stuff coming our way. doug, what's up? >> we have a stormy week next week for sure. but we also have in the middle a beautiful weekend. temperatures over the next couple of days going up. today, a high temperature of 50 degrees. at least in some areas. and right now we're still pretty mild compared to where we have been. 37 degrees the current number in d.c. 30 in fredericksburg and 24 out there towards patuxent river. we're going to be talking about the mild temperatures that are going to be here. into the 50s saturday and sunday. there will be a chance for showers late in the day sunday. but then look what happens on monday. the cold air moves in. and so does the snow. i'm going to break it down for you. i'm going to talk what to expect where you live, coming up in my full forecast. this is just the first of a series of storms to come through. >> oh, my. thank you, doug. new information tonight about the columbia mall gunman.

police sources tell news4 that darion aguilar met another man at the wendy's restaurant in burtonsville on the morning of the shooting. an employee at the restaurant said they parted ways when a cab arrived to take aguilar to the mall. police say aguilar killed two employees inside the zumiez store at the mall before taking his own life. tomorrow morning, the mall at columbia will hold a moment of silence at 11:15 to remember the victims. a big test on super bowl security. a suspicious powder turned up in the mail at several of the hotels near the stadium in new jersey. it happened today. the manager says he opened a letter and some powder fell out. he claims it was a white powder and that a typed letter inside mentioned al qaeda. it turns out the powder was baking soda. the tests at the other locations also came back negative for anything dangerous. huge crowds are now swarming into new york city, into the area, that is. they're all trying to be part of

a super bowl experience. after fears of cold weather, even snow, the forecast even now looking pretty good up there. this will be the first nfl title game held outdoors in a city where it snows. 82,000 people are expected to be there to watch the game. tonight the nfl commissioner is wading into the debate over the washington redskins name. roger goodell spoke with the media today in new york ahead of the super bowl. goodell defended the team's right to use the name. >> in a native american community poll, nine out of ten supported the name. eight out of ten americans in the general population would not like us to change the name. so we are listening. we're being respectful for people who disagree. but let's not forget this is the name of a football team. >> goodell was also asked if he could use the term redskins speaking directly to a native american. he sidestepped that question. new numbers out tonight show fairfax county is leading the

soaring high above the key bridge, oblivious to the traffic below while commuting back and forth from d.c. to virginia. it is just one of the amazing plans on stab for georgetown's future. imagine bypassing the buses and cars on a four-minute ride from georgetown to rosalyn. planners envision a gondola ferrying thousands of people across the potomac. >> i can picture the little gondoliers floating back and forth along the potomac. >> i know when i visited in rhode island, providence, they have a gondola. having that here in d.c. would be awesome. >> reporter: joe says for a relatively reasonable $80 million, the gondola could carry 4,000 passengers an hour. cheaper than light rail, and without adding to congestion on the key bridge. >> it moves a lot more people a lot more quickly, a lot less expensively than most other ways. >> reporter: it's just part of georgetown 2028, a massive plan

to reimagine the neighborhood with streetcars and a stop. >> how feasible is metro right here in georgetown? >> metro has to eventually come to georgetown. the only question is when. the reason is because the tunnel under the river now between rosalyn and foggy bottom is so congested with orange and blue line trains. >> it would definitely save money and save time for young people who don't usual hi have access to cars. >> reporter: it propose as walkable, bikable bridge to roosevelt island, d.c.'s nearly 90-acre park that is right now only accessible from virginia. >> it's a really cool place, especially during the day to walk around in the springtime. pretty cool to be able to get straight there without the hassle of going all the way to virginia first. >> reporter: sure, but the best laid plans often run up into the cold hard reality of cash, funding, budgets. right now the planners have just about got enough money to start a feezability study to really

see exactly what it would take, and more importantly, how much it would really cost to get some of these projects done. chris lawrence, news4. >> thanks, chris. tonight, a jury found a woman in virginia defamed a d.c. contractor with a negative review on yelp. the contractor sued the woman for $750,000 for giving his business a one-star review on the yelp.com website. the jury ruled in favor of the o award any damages. the case has raised questions about first amendment rights and how far businesses can go to stop negative reviews online. president obama held a google hangout today they called it to answer a few questions from people across the country. he was asked about his challenges, his family life, and somebody asked him about his changing hair color. >> the economy is improving. things are getting better. we are well-positioned, better

to where we have been. 37 right now. the winds are calm. looking at mostly cloudy skies. we're going to continue to see clouds rolling on in here over the next 24 to 48 hours. 30 degrees in leesburg. fredericksburg coming in at 30 degrees. and patuxent river coming in at 24 degrees. they are the cool spot and will continue to be this evening. storm team 4 radar, nothing to show. we're not look at any rain or snow any time soon. at least not for the weekend. but we do have the cloud cover. and because of the clouds, we're not going to go down nearly as cool as we have the last couple of nights. tonight we'll l be a rather mild night. and tomorrow will be a very mild day. the jet stream has shifted to the north. that's allowed a lot of mild air to start making its way our way. we hit 50 today. the coldest air back towards the west, towards chicago, minneapolis, places that should be this cold this time of year. for us, a little more on the mild side. but notice where the jet stream. it's right across our region. and that means more of a stormy pattern. the first of these storms comes in during the day on monday. we're going to watch this one very, very closely, because i do

think this one will come with some snow. but take a look at the details. future weather shows cool conditions outside right now. tomorrow nice and mild, plenty of sunshine, or at least a mixture of sun and clouds. some sunshine will help to get our temperatures into the low 50s. on sunday more of the same. the day will be dry. you're going go to some of the football festivities for super bowl sunday, looking good out there. but by the time you're leaving your friend's house, some shower activity. you may want to bring the umbrella just in case. we'll see some showers, and these will be rain showers. but then the cold air starts to move, in and then we'll see a chance for snow during the day on monday. most likely early monday morning. and i do think we'll see some accumulation because of mild air and the rain to start, accumulations should be fairly low. we'll continue to watch out for that very, very closely. that's the first storm. the weekend looking good, nice and mild. the first is snow on monday with a temperature of 39. rain or snow, depending on where you. 41 on tuesday. the next storm, this is one we're going to watch too. a temperature of 50 degrees. but early in the day, it could

be a little icy. temperatures could be near that freezing mark, and it could actually start off with ice and switch over to rain, and then we see the temperatures come in. that's when we get to 50 degrees. 38 an thursday. 37 on friday. one thing i do not see, not in the seven-day, not in the next ten or 15 days, temperatures in the 20s again. >> well, that's good news. >> trying to bring you some good news. >> we feel uplifted already. >> you done good.
